Lewis Holden adopted as MMP campaign spokesperson

As the Rugby World Cup campaign builds momentum this weekend, Aucklanders have the chance to take part in another campaign of national importance - to keep the MMP voting system.

Newly announced Campaign for MMP Auckland spokesperson Lewis Holden will be out and about in the Wynyard Quarter with national spokesperson Dr Sandra Grey, mingling with Rugby World Cup supporters on Sunday (September 18).

They will be at the Karanga Plaza from 11.30am-12.30pm on Sunday talking to supporters, meeting the public and discussing this year's referendum.

Wellington campaign launches

The local Wellington Campaign for MMP group was launched yesterday with the celebratory unveiling of the first billboard in a Wellington garden.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown was in attendance explaining why she's supporting MMP in the upcoming referendum, and she joined the residents who had hammered the first billboard and enjoyed some celebratory MMP cake.

Anton Oliver announces his support for keeping MMP

Anton Oliver, described as "the thinking man's rugby player" has declared his support for keeping MMP as New Zealand's voting system.

Oliver, who wore the All Black jersey for much of the decade between 1995 and 2007 and was All Black captain in 2001, is passionate about standing up for New Zealand and putting his weight behind what he believes is best for his country.

MMP has given voters more power

MMP has given voters more power, not less, and a return to a voting system that concentrates power in a small number of marginal seats would be a mistake, Campaign for MMP said today.
 
Campaign for MMP spokesperson Sandra Grey said that some voters would look unkindly on the latest round of electoral arrangements, from both sides of politics.
 
"We know that pulling in one or more MPs on the coat tails of an electorate win if a party hasn't reached 5% is seen as unfair by some. The electorate deals taking place mostly relate to parties below this threshold."

3 News Political Editor Duncan Garner thinks MMP is a good system and will stay.

"I absolutely do (think MMP will stay)," he told Dale Husband on Radio Waatea this week.

"I think we've moved on, I think it is the way to go."

"I think MMP's a pretty good system; it allows minorities to have a say around the table, and to have influence, without stalling the process."
