MMP supporters welcome referendum law

The Campaign for MMP welcomes the law setting up next year's referendum and looks forward to putting the case for keeping MMP to the public.

Parliament will this afternoon complete the final stages of the Electoral Referendum Bill, which sets up next year's MMP referendum.

"The referendum provides the opportunity to remind people why MMP was chosen in 1993, and about the positive effects it has had on New Zealand," Campaign for MMP spokesperson Sandra Grey said.

The addition of limits to advertising from campaign promoters will further strengthened chances of a fair and impartial MMP referendum next year, Campaign for MMP said today.

"Over 1,000 people made submissions on the Referendum bill and a majority asked for a cap on advertising spending by campaign promoters. Parliament has listened," said Sandra Grey, Campaign for MMP spokesperson.

MMP campaign acknowledges Graeme Hunt

Campaign for MMP has today acknowledged the passing of author Graeme Hunt.

Graeme was a co-founder, with Peter Shirtcliffe, for the Put MMP To The Vote lobby group.

Campaign for MMP spokesperson Sandra Grey said that both organisations had a strong interest in an active public discussion leading into next year's MMP referendum, and acknowledged Graeme's role in this important debate.

Modified MMP an option for voters unhappy with ACT situation

Voters have the option of improving MMP next year, a pro-MMP group said today, following comments from the Prime Minister over the ACT situation.

The Prime Minister said at yesterday's post cabinet press conference that it was his view that ACT's recent problems would increase the likelihood that people would vote MMP out next year, or mean voters may take the view that MMP isn't working well.

100 years after suffragists won the right to vote, New Zealand's decision in 1993 to back MMP was a good one for women, according to a new report released today for Women's Suffrage Day.

The report, by Women for MMP, discusses both the better representation and specific policy wins for women since MMP was introduced.

Positive signals on MMP referendum process


Campaign for MMP has welcomed positive signals from the Justice Minister about a fair process in next year's MMP referendum, but says spending caps are still needed.

At a Wellington conference yesterday Simon Power confirmed that referendums will be run alongside the general election to maximise voter turnout, that there will be a full education campaign, and that voters will be clearly informed about how to achieve a modified MMP.
